The Duck Dynasty television show is the latest reality show to achieve ratings success. The show is based around the Robertson family and their successful business “Duck Commander” in West Monroe, Louisiana. They have become recognizable media stars because of their long beards and southern charm. Their biggest product is called the Duck Commander, and is a duck call hunters use to lure ducks. They also sell an array of other products marketed towards duck hunters. Their business has made the Robertson family wealthy and famous.
Meet The Robertson Family
The Robertson family is made up of the Robertson brothers and their wives and children. Phil Robertson is the inventor of the Duck Commander product and he is humorously anti-tech in a tech crazed world, claiming that he doesn’t even own a cellphone or a computer. Kay is his wife, and episodes always end with the family eating a home cooked meal made by Kay.
Si Robertson is Phil’s brother, and is the creator of the reeds that are used in the Duck Commander. Besides being a Vietnam war vet, he has also made news because of his struggles with mental illness and alcoholism. Si Robertson has written a tell-all book where he details his addiction issues. His wife is Christine Robertson, and their business is run by their large extended family. They seem like an extremely close-knit family now, but Si and Phil had to overcome many obstacles to reach this point.
Si Robertson Reveals The Darker Side Of The Duck Dynasty In His Book
Despite Si and Phil’s current success, they also had many periods of hardship, including dealing with a mother who had such severe mental illness she ended up in mental institutions. Si Robertson candidly talks about this in his memoir
Si-Cology: Tales and Wisdom From Duck Dynasty’s Favorite Uncle.
The memoir details even darker memories, when Si Robertson talks about his days in Vietnam. This is when his alcoholism was at its worst, and he even says that he has a “faulty” brain. During this period of his life he says that he came very close to killing both a Vietnamese boy and a woman. Eventually, once he realized how dangerous his behavior was becoming, he worked on becoming sober after coming back to America.Si Robertson’s problems became so bad that he alsoalmost attempted suicide by jumping off of a window. He finally sought the treatment that he desperately needed and achieved sobriety.
Si Robertson says that he now leads a happy and fulfilled life. The change in his life circumstances couldn’t be more dramatic. Not only has he broken the family cycle of mental illness and alcoholism, he has also gone on to help start a successful business and be a star on a reality television show. But perhaps even more importantly, he has found happiness in his own life with his family and sobriety. He has a son and a daughter with four grandchildren, and is still married to the wife that stuck by him through all his struggles.
