Which Fitness Tips Actually Matter? – What Every Beginner Should Know
A lot of the time, we often find ourselves looking for a silver bullet that would make achieving fitness a piece of cake. The truth is, you probably shouldn’t have too much cake if you’re looking to get fit. But we digress. How do you know if a fitness tip is worth really doing?
If that tip does not involve taking the amount of calories and nutrition, nor the right amount of exercise, you can probably safely ignore it and still meet your fitness goals.
The Pareto Principle in Fitness
The Pareto Principle tells us that 80% of any result comes from 20% of the effort. It’s been applied in many fields successfully, from economics, to all manner of arts and sciences. What does this have to do with anything?
Getting the right amount of exercise and nutrition are essentially the 20% that gives you 80% of your results.
The simple fact of the matter is- exercising and eating right is the most important fitness tip that you will ever need to know.
The rest – getting enough sleep, eating 5 meals instead of 3, taking whatever supplement is in fashion – all of those are in the other part of the Pareto curve. They’re the 80% of the things you do that get you the 20% of your results.
What Isn’t Too Important
Timing when you take your meals, figuring out which brand of protein shake you should get – these are all less important in the greater scheme of things. Unless you’re a top athlete, or aspire to perform particularly well in a physical discipline, there’s not too much reason to pay too much attention to them, as they will not be responsible for the bulk of any positive result you’ve got. You should do them, but don’t get torn up about them.
At advanced levels, the other things would matter a bit more, as they can mean the difference between improving and not improving. But of course, you will hardly if at all see any good athlete not pay any attention to the basics.
What You Should Do Instead
If you’re just starting to get into shape – it’s always best to not get too worked up about “fitness tips” or “fitness secrets”. A novice’s first priority would be to find out how how much exercise and calories they should be getting – and how to do it safely.
Well, maybe we overlooked another important fitness tip in that core 20% – which is to stay motivated. One reason so many are looking for easy ways these days is simply because staying fit for a long time is hard. It’s getting harder to grasp the idea that some things just need to be worked at. That’s why they’re called workouts. And that’s why “diet” has “die” in it.
Maybe it’s because younger people have been brought up in a time where games have cheat codes and everything is easier that has led to this sort of thinking, but whatever the reason, it’s more prevalent than it ever was. But the truth is simple.
There are no silver bullets. The only way to lasting fitness is to put in the time and effort to maintain your diet and keep the right amounts of exercise.
