Do you have any children? What about grandchildren? Future grandchildren are the worst because they’re probably not even born yet. By the time they are you could be well on your way to the grave. Even if you are still alive when your grandchildren are born it doesn’t mean they’ll remember you. It’s more likely they’ll remember you as the person everyone talked about, plus they’ll maybe recognize you from a photo if you’re lucky. That could be what you have to look forward to if you continue to smoke.
Please don’t think that was just for the benefit of scaring you. It’s very real and that exact same scenario happens to lots of people because they can’t stop putting cigarettes in their mouth. It’s very sad and it’s just life, but if you’re not dead yet it means you have a choice. It’s your choice and if you decided to turn your back on cigarettes now you could regain a nice set of healthy lungs, but you have to start right now. No messing around. Here’s some ways other people have been saved so please incorporate them into your life.
Digging inside your head
The easiest way to stop smoking is to go and speak to a professional therapist. They can get inside your head and change the way you think. This is obviously an expensive option and one down from rehab, but if you want to give yourself a great chance of getting through this it’s sometimes the only way. Just because you see a therapist doesn’t exactly make it easy, so be prepared to have a very hard time just like you’ll have with any of these techniques.
Start eating chewing gum
People start chewing gum whenever they feel like a cigarette and almost by magic they convince their brain to start craving the juicy flavor of peppermint instead. It’s obviously a lot harder than it sounds, but it works and certain people can see success from it. You can even get special nicotine chewing gum and that should help you deal with the physical side of withdrawal. Once you get over the mental side you can then finally conquer the physical side.
One small step at a time
One of the worst things you can do is go cold turkey because there’s no chance you will make it. There are people who can do it, but no doubt you’ve tried before and this isn’t going to be you. Once you realize you’re not the kind of person who is going to go cold turkey there’s absolutely no point in trying it again. It’s still not going to work, so instead you can do it as slowly as possible. Start smoking one less cigarette per week and maybe after 6 months you’ll be on one per day.
Learn to relax
How many times have you reached for a cigarette because you wanted to relax? Let’s not get into the discussion about whether or not they do allow you to relax, but you need to understand that people believe it works. If you were to learn how to relax without a cigarette you wouldn’t need to grab one when you felt stressed. What you choose to do when learning to relax is completely your choice, but just know that meditation and yoga are two very effective ways to do it.
Stay away from triggers
I’m sure you know someone who smokes as soon as a little alcohol has passed their lips. It’s almost a certainty they will reach into their pocket and pull out the cigarettes after the first drink. At other times it happens in certain locations, so someone might smoke as soon as they’ve gotten into work because their friends smoke. You need to try your best to stay away from the triggers, so don’t drink alcohol and don’t go outside with your friends at work.
