Each year, over five trillion cigarettes are produced. No, what you just read wasn’t a typo. It really is trillion with a T and not a B. Those cigarettes are then smoked by over a billion people around the world. China, the US, Japan, Russia and Indonesia are the top five consumers of cigarettes. Although smoking is a truly global activity, that doesn’t mean it’s good for anyone who partakes in it.
5 Reasons Smoking Cigarettes Totally Sucks
You’ve probably heard that every cigarette you smoke takes 12 minutes off your life. Although that’s not something anyone wants to think about, because that statistic is used so often, it’s easy to become desensitized to it. Instead of relying on just a single stat, let’s look at five different reasons why cigarettes are a habit that everyone should kick:
Concrete Link to Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society, even though lung cancer is the most preventable form of cancer death in our society, it’s still the leading cause of cancer death in the United States for both men and women. What’s worse is that tobacco use accounts for 87% of lung cancer deaths.
It only takes a bit of back of the envelope math to realize that the average smoker spends a few thousand dollars a year on cigarettes. And for heavier smokers, that number can easily be twice as much. Paying off credit card debt, going on a vacation or putting a down payment on a car are just a few things people who quit smoking cigarettes can do with their savings.
Hard to Breathe
As previously mentioned, cigarettes can be linked to the majority of lung cancer cases. But long before someone’s health reaches that critical point, smoking can still make it hard to breathe. For people who like to exercise or enjoy an outdoor activity, cigarettes can get in their way.
This is a point that many people will happily argue about all day. That being said, if you take an objective point of view, it’s hard to argue that cigarettes are something that smell good. Not only do they get into your clothes, but they make your hair and mouth smell. What’s even worse is the yellowing effect they can have on those areas. The same unpleasant combination of smell and yellowing is true for any home that’s smoked inside of.
Speeds Up Mental Decline
It’s fairly common for people who have already been smoking for several decades to believe that there’s no reason for them to stop now. However, one of the reasons that’s not true is because continued smoking by older adults has been linked to a faster rate of mental decline. A study published in the journal Neurology found that even if their family doesn’t have a history of Alzheimer’s or dementia, both men and women over the age of 65 are more susceptible to those diseases if they don’t stop smoking cigarettes.
Is There a Better Way?
Like caffeine, nicotine is a stimulant. As a result, it can increase your blood pressure and heart rate. However, when it comes to smoking cigarettes, the most damaging impact comes from the hundreds of other ingredients and thousands of chemicals they contain. Because of that reality, most people agree that if you like to smoke and want to continue doing so, it’s definitely best to simply smoke tobacco by itself.
Even though plain tobacco isn’t plagued by a seemingly endless list of harmful additives, one reason many people still opt for standard cigarettes is because they think dealing with loose tobacco is going to be a hassle. While that may have been true in the past, it no longer has to be that way.
The reason it’s possible to enjoy loose tobacco without worrying about dealing with a mess is because it can be loaded into a vaporizer like the Pax by Ploom. All you have to do is use a grinder to make your tobacco into a fine powder, and then it can be enjoyed in vapor form. As you can see in its product images, one of the great features of Pax vaporizers is they’re very small. Because the Pax by Ploom easily fits in your hand and pocket, you can take it just about anywhere.
Since they’re literally designed to be as addictive as possible, it’s not easy to quit smoking cigarettes. But thanks to the new technologies that have hit the market over the last five years, it’s now possible to enjoy tobacco in vapor form while steering clear of cigarette’s most harmful additives and chemicals.
