Vacations are supposed to be care-free, relaxed events where we indulge and recharge, right? But for those of us who are trying to lose weight the anticipation of a vacation can come with a certain amount of dread mixed in as well. All of the indulging that is typically done on vacations can result in three steps backwards when it comes to weight loss, especially if you take a break from working out as well. Instead of ditching the exercise for a week and undoing all of the positive changes you’ve made, use these tips to help you sneak in workouts throughout your vacation so that you return home just as fit as when you left:
1. Pack your workout clothes. It’s kind of hard to work out when you don’t have your workout clothes with you, and even if you only wear them once or twice that’s once or twice more than if you hadn’t brought them at all. Seeing your workout gear can be enough to motivate you to fit in a few workouts over the course of your vacation, so be sure to make room in your suitcase for a couple different workout outfits and your workout shoes.
2. Workout before everyone else wakes up. The easiest way to fit in a workout is to do it before everyone else wakes up each morning. If you’re trying to schedule your workouts when everyone else is heading to the pool or for cocktails you’re probably not going to go. But if you hit the gym or plan a run for the early morning hours when everyone is still sleeping you’re much more likely to fit it in.
3. Choose activities that get you moving. Before you leave on your vacation scope out some attractions that will double as a workout, such as kayaking around the lake or in the ocean, taking a bicycle tour of the city, or hiking trails. These types of activities are a great way to experience a city in a unique way and have the added benefit of being a built-in workout as well.
4. Walk to your destinations as often as possible. If you’re in an area that has a lot of cafes and shops in walking distance then ditch the car and opt to walk there instead. You’ll see more of the city you’re visiting this way and you’ll get in a leisurely workout at the same time. Plus you’ll get to spend more time outside instead of being cooped up in the car driving around and fighting for parking spaces.
5. Use bodyweight exercises in your hotel room. If you don’t have a gym to visit or don’t feel comfortable taking a run in a foreign city by yourself then use bodyweight exercises to put together circuits that you can do in your room. Some easy hotel-friendly exercise moves are: lunges, squats, crunches, planks, wall-sits, triceps dips, push-ups, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and jump rope, just to name a few.
Being on vacation doesn’t mean that you have to take a step backwards in your health and fitness journey, it just means you have to modify what you normally do on vacation to fit in with your healthy lifestyle. By making exercise a priority you can come back from vacation weighing the same – or less! – than you weighed before you went.
