How do you get rid of fat? It’s one of the most talked about dilemmas right now, and yet we still are battling an epic obesity problem. Maybe you’re contemplating how to start shedding pounds, perhaps you’re just starting a workout program, or maybe you’re plateauing in your weight loss efforts… whatever the reason, if you’re trying to trim some excess fat off your frame, but don’t know where to start, these tips are for you:
Do a mix of cardio and weight training.
A lot of people fall into the trap of doing excessive amounts of cardio with little to no weight training, or spending hours upon hours lifting weights in the weight room while barely acknowledging that cardio exists. This one track frame of mind may work initially for your weight loss efforts, but it doesn’t give your body a total package approach to getting fit. To slim down and shape up you need a healthy mix of both cardio and weight training in your exercise routine.
Eat real foods.
Marketing is an amazing thing, and product marketers have nearly convinced the world that you can be healthy eating packaged, processed foods simply because they’re labeled “low fat” or “fat free”. Eliminating all fat from your diet, however, is setting you up for fat loss failure because your body needs healthy fats. Instead of buying foods that are advertised as aiding in weight loss, stick to a diet that consists of real, whole foods. Filling your diets with fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins – with a little bit of whole grains, dairy, and healthy fats on the side – is a surefire way to fat loss success.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
You may think that diet or zero-calorie soda is OK because the calories have been eliminated, but the truth is they’re still bad for you. Your liquid diet needs to consist primarily of water, not manufactured drinks, if you want to stimulate weight loss. Water helps cleanse your system and keep your body running at optimal speed, while sugary drinks only dehydrate you and leave you feeling rundown and sluggish.
Commit to 8 hours a night.
You may think that your body has adjusted to getting a minimal amount of sleep each night, but you’re body probably disagrees. Sleep is the time when your body repairs anything that has broken down and preps for the next day, and by not getting enough of it you’re forcing your body to start working overtime. By getting enough sleep you’ll have plenty of time to reset from the previous day’s stresses and prepare for the next, so you wake up energized and ready to work out and face the day at your peak strength.
Add in interval training.
One of the best ways to burn fat from your body is to do interval training instead of steady state cardio. Interval training mixes high intensity periods of cardio with low intensity periods, which helps your body burn through fat much more efficiently than plugging along at the same speed for the entirety of your workout. The next time you get on a cardio machine at the gym try alternating 1 min at a hard level with 1 min at an easy level for 20 minutes. You’ll get a much better workout than if you just hopped on a machine and did 30 minutes at a moderate pace.
By implementing a combination of these five tips into your diet and exercise routine you’re sure to start blasting fat and speeding up your weight loss efforts. Get plenty of sleep, drink tons of water, eat healthy, whole foods, commit to interval training during your cardio workouts, and pick up some weights and start lifting – it’s a recipe for fat loss success.
