Electronic cigarettes have really been growing in popularity over the last few years primarily due to the healthier benefits provided by e-cigarettes when compared to traditional cigarettes, plus the availability of quality liquid (it’s called e-liquid but some e-cigarette manufacturers refer to e-liquid by the name of e-juice). The e-liquid comes in lots of different and appealing flavours and a range of nicotine strengths. The choice of e-liquid flavours hitting the market has grown in leaps and bounds in the last few years and there are so many flavours now, including weird ones!
e-Cigarette liquid/ juice ingredients
The majority of the e-cigarette liquids used by the major manufacturers contain nicotine (in varying strengths) plus pharmaceutical grade propylene glycol and/or pharmaceutical grade vegetable glycerine (as the major ingredient/s) along with flavourings (natural and/or artificial).
As far as the nicotine strength level in e-liquid goes, customers can expect strengths ranging from 5mg (low nicotine level) to 36mg (strong/high nicotine level). There are 0mg levels available too but there’s a bit less choice when it comes to flavours, especially tobacco flavours.
There are also intermediate nicotine strength levels. Different manufacturers have different levels but as a guide expect 10mg, 15mg, 20mg and 25mg in e-cigarette liquids. e-Cigarette liquid comes in small and compact bottles with capacities ranging from 3ml bottles to 30 ml bottles generally, but you can get 100ml and 500ml if you shop around.
Characteristics of propylene glycol-based e-liquid
- Provides the best throat hit
- Produces less vapour than vegetable glycerine
- Thinner than vegetable glycerine and doesn’t leave as much residue behind inside the e-cigarette
- Kit can last longer because it doesn’t have to work as hard with propylene glycol
- Flavours can be more pronounced
- Suitable for use with most kit
Characteristics of vegetable glycerine-based e-liquid
- Tends to taste slightly sweeter than propylene glycol
- Throat hit is reduced
- Creates more vapour
- Leaves more residue behind in the vapourising process so can clog kit faster
- Not suitable for some kit
