1) Long-shaped faces
A narrow bone structure, high forehead, and long well defined chin are typical elements of a long-shaped face.
Styles that suit this face shape include curly bobs which shorten it or a mid-length style with layers at cheekbone level to create texture. A side parting as opposed to a middle parting creates an illusion of width. Avoid one-length straight styles as they reinforce the long-faced impression and better keep your hair above shoulder length. Beware of anything that adds inches such as buns balanced on the top of the head or quiffs. Fringes, curls and flicks work wonders for you.
2) Heart-shaped faces
As the name implies, the top half of those faces is wider and narrows below the cheekbones to a small but well defined chin. If your face has the shape of a heart you can create the illusion of balance between top and bottom with curls and waves introduced at cheekbone level. A fringe is an option, but is best worn choppy and sliced into rather than in a heavy straight line. Avoid jaw length bobs that hug the chin as they draw attention to narrowness. Too much height at the crown will also give the appearance of a narrower chin. Whatever you do, choose a style that will create volume around the bottom of your face.
3) Square-shaped faces
Square-shaped faces are accompanied by a strong bone structure including a wide jaw and a chiseled chin. The right hairstyle for you is wispy at the top and soft around your ears -an instant disguise for a square jaw. Long straight styles and really short cuts above your jaw line will exaggerate the squareness of your face shape. Try wearing bangs swept over to one side, they will create a diagonal movement and will minimize your square shapes.
When you style your hair at home, make sure that you achieve some roundness to the shape and some height at the crown.
4) Oval-shaped faces
Oval face shapes are characterised by slim proportions and prominent cheekbones. The forehead and chin are almost exactly the same width. If you are lucky enough to have these proportions, you should also feel confident to try a radical new look. Short, long, layered or bobbed, almost everything looks good on you.
Consider what part of your face you want to accentuate and get creative with bangs and your everyday styling. Avoid “wearing” your style on your face otherwise you’ll lose your face shape behind the hair. Heavy bangs or too forward-directed styles would also cover up your beautiful features.
5) Round-shaped faces
If you’ve got wide cheeks and non-angular features—aka a round face—long, layered cuts work beautiful. Steer clear of full bangs and one-length hair as they can accentuate the roundness of your face. Ideally, have no bangs. The focus point then becomes the bridge of the nose, creating a more oval shape.
For those of you wearing your hair short, add height and fullness to the crown to give the illusion of a narrower face shape. The fullness of the cut should not be at the cheeks and ears as this will make your face appear wider. Middle parts can create the illusion of narrow length as well.
