Safety Wear
Health and safety come first in cricket and protective wear is both essential and highly visible in the sport especially for those near the stumps ie. The batsman and wicket keeper. These players wear shin, thigh, arm and chest guards and the batsman also wears protective gloves. In addition, most players will wear an abdomen guard or box to protect their genitals during play and some players chose to wear a helmet with mouth guards.
The Sun
Suncream, a sunhat or visor and lip block are crucial pieces of equipment for cricket players. Unlike most sports it is played outside over long and often consecutive days. As such, protection from the sun is taken as seriously as protection from the ball! Often you will see players with white lips, noses or stripes on their cheeks. This is thick sunblock to protect those areas that are most sensitive to the sun. A lot of players forget their earlobes and end up with awful blisters, don’t be caught out!
Clothing
All players wear a standard uniform of white that includes a polo shirt (normally long sleeved) with loose fitting trousers and a woollen pullover tank top or vest style jumper. A lot of players chose to wear specialist footwear in the form of spiked shoes to give more traction on the grass which can be slippery when wet. All of these items of clothing are normally purchased at specialist stores such as Talent Cricket who have over twenty years’ experience in the field.
Equipment
A decent cricket bat is a must if you are to be a serious player on the field. Starter bats can be found in generic sports shops for relatively little money. With bats priced into the hundreds of pounds region it is definitely worth doing your research and this short video explains some of the pros and cons of the more expensive contenders.
The Rules
In cricket the rules are called The Cricket Laws and these are established by the Marylebone Cricket Club which is the world’s largest cricket brand, established in London in 1787. There are 42 laws currently and they dictate everything about the game including how the games is won, when a player should be dismissed and even how the pitch should be set up and maintained.
