Aromatherapy: The Benefits Of Scented Candles

Normally used for aromatherapy, scented candles help your body and senses. The human body is quite sensitive to various scents. When exposed to certain odours, the brain reacts, and changes in mood occur, or on occasion, physical changes in a person can be instigated.

History of Aromatherapy

Dating as far back as 6000 years ago, it was the Egyptians who first used aromatic oils during baths and massages. It was also a chief method used for the embalming process.

These days, aromatherapy has become an alternative for many. Certain scents are said to help with various emotional, mental, physical and spiritual states including mental clarity and creating a relaxing mood. It’s even great for those who have insomnia and want to get a good night’s rest.

Types of Candles

There are different kinds of scented candles available in the market. From a variety of essential oil scents and combinations, users can find the most suitable one they need.

Ideally, soy candles are recommended over petroleum and synthetic based wax candles when used in aromatherapy. Soy candles are more appropriate since they do not contain any artificial additive. These are naturally made and therefore allow users to garner the benefits of the aroma much better. As for consistency, pure soy candles can be very soft and putty-like and burn a lot longer than regular candles.

On the other hand, candles made from petroleum and synthetic based waxes should be dismissed for aromatherapy since the wax affects the scent and may negate the positive benefits being sought.

Benefits of Scented Candles

Although aromatherapy using soy candles aren’t a cure-all for all ailments, it does offer a great number of advantages. Here are a few things it can help with:

  • Insomnia

Those suffering from sleeping problems can use clary sage scented candles to help lull them to sleep. Roman chamomile scent is also recommended since it is proven to reduce restlessness.

  • Muscle tension and aches

Peppermint infused candles are said to be perfect for this type of problem. They can assist with headaches, muscle pain or even problems with digestion. Orange and cinnamon can also help if an increase in energy is what is needed.

  • Allergies and infections

The eucalyptus aroma is said to be helpful when it comes to relieving allergies or various infections. It can also aid in fighting fatigue or dizziness because of its strong, camphor-like scent.

  • Reducing stress

Perhaps the most well-known benefit of lighting up scented candles is that it can assist in reducing stress. Using lavender candles is common for those who want to relax. In fact, yoga as well as meditation enthusiasts often use this scent to ensure a deep state of relaxation. Apart from using lavender oil, blends of other essential oils such as rose, sandalwood and ylang ylang are also ideal for this use.

  • Maintaining focus

Students, and those who work long hours, could benefit from lighting up citrus scented candles since these candles can help maintain a clear focus. Other scents such as basil, thyme and cypress would also work great since they encourage reflection and deep thought.

Scented candles are definitely helpful when it comes to relieving stress and a variety of ailments. When trying out aromatherapy for the first time, there are plenty of different types of candles infused with essential oils up for grabs at local shops or online. Just look for the right one and make sure to properly extinguish the flame once done.
