Sleep is an activity that can restore the freshness of the body, process memories, and cause dreaming. Even though it is a daily activity that everyone partakes in, there are still a lot of people that don’t realize the importance of sleep.
Adults require about seven hours of sleep, but approximately 35% of US adults do not get that amount. This shows that many people do not categorize sleep as a pressing need for their health, unlike fitness and nutrition, for example. As a matter of fact, only one in 10 Americans considers sleeping to be a top priority for good health.
Because of this negligence, about 50-70 million people in the US suffer from chronic sleep disorders. If these disorders are not taken care of, they will have a negative impact on a patient’s social, physical, and mental life.
Sleeping is particularly important for the brain because it needs to be restored to keep working during the day. A whopping 45% of Americans reported that inadequate sleep affected their daily activities.
Inadequate sleep can also lead to a variety of problems, such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and diabetes. These problems can cause a lot of difficulties and medical costs that can just be prevented by adopting good sleeping habits.
This large percentage of people living with sleep problems has led to an explosion in the sleep aid market. It was valued at $28.6 billion in 2017, and this number continues to rise steadily.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that many companies attempt to combat by providing customers with various sleep-related technology. For instance, the CPAP device that is used for this purpose is worth $4.3 billion. This creates a lucrative market place for the manufacturers of these products.
Practicing regular healthy sleeping patterns are more than helpful. For example, one should go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time. Engaging in relaxing activities before sleep is also recommended.
