Making a decision for what career you will pursue in life is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. It determines what you will be doing for the rest of your life! And from there, making the decision for where you will go to receive the education you need for your career path is another extremely important decision.
Once you’ve decided that you want to go to beauty school, you now have the very important decision to make of where you will go to receive your education. What beauty school you choose to go to will determine the quality of education and experience you receive, and how prepared you will be for your new career once you graduate.
Here are 5 things to know about any beauty school before you enroll:
1. Where are they located?
You don’t want to choose a cosmetology school solely based on location. There are many other aspects which are much more important than this. But while getting your cosmetology education, you are going to be spending a whole lot of time here. So just make sure that it is a reasonable distance from your home, and that you have a reliable way to get there.
2. What type of environment do they have?
This is a very important, but often overlooked component of any cosmetology school. You want to look very closely at the environment of the school and make sure that it is a good fit for you. Take a look at the pictures on their site. Are they traditional, conservative, or very trendy? Do these pictures match your personal style? When checking out the school, do they seem to have a very structured, or more laid back type of environment? These are all things that you will want to get a good feel for before you enroll. You will be spending a lot of time at this school, so you want to make sure it is a place where you will feel comfortable.
On top of that, most cosmetology school graduates tend to gravitate toward the same environment that they experienced during school. That is what they know, the types of styles they’ve learned, and the environment in which they’ve learned to feel comfortable in. So make sure that this is a similar environment in which you would like to work after you graduate.
3. What type of experience will I get?
You will also want to know what type of experience you will get in your given school. How will they help prepare you for your career? You will want to know how much in-class learning you will receive to make sure you properly understand all the theory around cosmetology. You will also want to know how much hands-on experience you will be able to receive before graduation. Your time in beauty school is the time to learn and prepare for your upcoming career, so you want to make sure to choose a school that will help to best prepare you.
4. Do they have any job assistance programs?
Many beauty schools will have job placement assistance, career training (help with resumes, interview prep, etc). These can be very beneficial services that can help you prepare for your job search, or that can even help you to find a job.
5. What type of accolades do they boast?
You might also want to see if your potential school holds any accolades, if they’ve received any awards, etc. You may feel that a given school looks good to you, but it is good to see how others feel about the school. If a school has won awards for the best beauty school, trade school, salon, etc in a given area, you know that they could be a very good choice.
