Hair extensions are a popular and easy way to change a style in an instant – whether you want extra length or simply some volume to fine hair. They’re especially ideal for the Summer styles such as long beach waves and festival perfect fishtail braids.
Swimming & Sun Exposure
But how do you look after them when the sun is at its strongest and when you want to go swimming?
We all know that chlorine can damage our hair, but for hair extensions it’s even worse as they don’t receive any of the nutrients and oils from the scalp that our own hair does.
Chlorine in pools as well as salt from the sea, combined with heat in Summer climates can make the extensions become matted, and the chemicals in swimming pools can sometimes cause discolouration. Salt and chorine can also break down keratin bonds which will then lead to weakness in the extensions.
If you do want to swim, the best way to take care of your hair extensions is to tie your hair in a braid to avoid any chlorine, or wear a swimming cap.
After swimming, immediately rinse your hair with fresh water and apply a leave in conditioner throughout your whole hair to stop it drying out as much and protect it from the chlorine. Let them dry naturally to avoid any more extreme heat.
If you’re sunbathing or out in the sun, wear a hat to cover your hair. This is essential for yourself at peak times of the day when the sun is at its highest, but it will also help protect your hair from the harmful rays
Treatments after sun exposure
In the sun, our hair can often get that dry, frizzy feeling. A wonder product to combat this is Moroccanoil which can be used on both your own natural hair and on hair extensions. Simply take a couple of drop in your hair and distribute through the hair concentrating on the ends which is the area that can become the driest.
Styling
Try to let your hair extensions air dry naturally after washing as much as possible so that you use less heat on them. If you do choose to use heat to style, then always use a heat protector spray. Braids are a popular style for Summer hair so let your hair air dry naturally then simply braid on one side for a quick and easy holiday style.
