According to reports, many women feel conscious about the way their breasts are shaped. So, it is not surprising that in the past few years, several techniques to reconstruct the shape of a woman’s breast have been introduced in the cosmetic world. In most cases, women opt for a basic breast reconstruction, there are many who opt for areola reconstruction as well.
What is areola Reconstruction?
Areola reconstruction is the reconstruction of the shape of the areola with the help of grafting or micropigmentation. This surgery is usually carried out three to six months after the person has undergone a breast reconstruction surgery. It is a simple surgical procedure, but the patient needs at least a month’s time to recover from the surgery.
Reconstruction through grafting
Grafting is the most common technique used for areola reconstruction. In this technique, the cosmetic surgeons graft a layer of skin onto the areola. This layer of skin is taken from a separate section of the body, and it is adjusted to meet the skin tone and quality of the breast. In most cases, the cosmetic surgeons use the skin on the inner thigh or the buttock for the donor skin graft, but for an areola reconstruction, the most common donor graft sites are the earlobe, labia, or the nipple itself. These areas are used for the donor skin path since they match the skin tone and the texture of the nipple better than the remaining parts of the body.
The grafting technique is the most commonly used technique for such surgeries as it has a lot of advantages. The biggest advantage of this surgery is that it keeps the blood supply in the breast intact. Another very important benefit of this technique is the fact that is leaves minimal scars. Most women who get reconstruction surgeries are not happy with the appearance of their breasts, and they prefer having fewer scars after the surgery as well. So this technique is ideal for them, as it constrains the scars close to the nipple region.
Reconstruction through micropigmentation
The micropigmentation technique is also known as the tattooing method. This method is usually used in patients who get a complete breast reconstruction. It is called tattooing because the instruments used to perform this surgery are similar to a tattoo machine. In comparison to the other techniques, this method is relatively fast, and it does not leave a prominent scar. As a matter of fact, a lot of women use this technique to hide or reduce the scars that are already present around their nipple region.
This technique stimulates the texture, shape, and color of the areola, so patients who do not wish to get a surgical areola reconstruction after their breast reconstruction can use this method to change the appearance of their nipple. But, this method creates an optical illusion around the nipple, so it is not a permanent fix.
