Miami is renowned for being a city of beautiful people, gliding in from all walks of life and a variety of cultural backgrounds. It’s little wonder, then, that Florida boasts some of the best cosmetic surgeons in the world; artists of their trade who are trusted to sculpt and maintain these perfect faces and bodies.
But, because cosmetic surgery is a matter of beauty and is thus somewhat subjective, it can be difficult to know which out of all the plastic surgeons in Florida to choose. Not to mention, one’s face and body tend to form an essential part of one’s identity, so altering either should only be trusted to the most caring and thorough professionals.
How to Select the Best Plastic Surgeon in Florida
Fortunately for Floridans, there is a regulating body for cosmetic surgeons known as the Florida Society of Plastic surgeons, which has been in operation since 1956. The FSPS gives the following advice on what you should always look for when selecting a cosmetic surgeon, in order to ensure that you get the safest and highest quality of operation possible:
-The surgeon you choose should be affiliated with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) or the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS); preferably, choose one that is affiliated with both.
-When checking for affiliations, don’t simply trust the yellow pages or newspaper ads, because neither the state nor any national specialty society has control over claims made in them.
-Always check to see if your plastic surgeon has been granted hospital privileges. Why? Hospitals require that surgeons submit licensure documentation and to prove that they have the requisite training and ability in their specialties before these privileges are granted. Surgeons are then subject to an ongoing, thorough peer review process, which they must pass if they want to retain their hospital privileges.
-If you do decide to risk it with a surgeon that performs surgery in his or her own facility, rather than a hospital, and the very least ensure that make sure that they have been properly inspected and accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF), the Joint Commission on Ambulatory Health Care (JCAHO), or the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
-Always inquire about the surgeon’s professional reputation within the medical community. Call your local county medical society and your family physician. Find out what you can about the surgeon’s practice, ethics, training, and performance.
And of course, if you live in Florida, and do not want to go to the hassle of checking all of the above yourself, you can simply check to see if a surgeon is a member of the FSPS. Plastic surgeons in Florida who are registered with the FSPS are a good choice, because the FSPS checks to ensure that every surgeon listed with them meets the above requirements.
