You have found where the beautiful affordable holiday rentals are, booked your location and have organized your activities. When traveling, you may not have the luxury of planning your meals ahead of time and, therefore, being able to make conscious healthy decisions. Vacations can mean eating whatever is available- not so great for your diet!
So how can you maintain a healthy regimen yet still be able to relax and enjoy your time away? To start, just follow these tips and tricks!
Choose Restaurants Wisely
When on vacation, you will most likely be dining out frequently which means you are at the mercy of the restaurant menu when it comes to your food options. The first way to avoid unhealthy foods is to skip the fast food chains like McDonalds or Burger King where you are sure to get lots of junk food with little nutritional benefits. Look for smaller restaurants where they are likely to use real ingredients, have healthier menu options and be able to cater to any dietary requests you may have.
Shop Like At Home
If at all possible, it is a great idea to prepare your own food while on vacation. Look for grocery stores and make healthy purchases as you would do when at home. Many grocery stores have salad bars that you can grab a healthy meal from or simply stock up on fruits and nutritious snacks that are easy to take on the go.
If you are able to cook your own meals while on vacation, that is even better! Then, you can plan your meals as if you were at home and take away the stress of dining out. Grab your groceries on the first day of your vacation and you’ll be all set!
Pack the Snacks
When you are out an about on your vacation, you are going to get hungry. Rather than stopping to grab a snack, bring a few snacks with you. This way, you are not at the mercy of the stores in the area which may only have unhealthy snacks (that ice cream shop on the side of the road may look delicious but definitely isn’t the healthiest!). Pack fresh fruit, granola bars or some pretzels which are all easy to travel with and will satisfy that craving for food between meals.
Stock Up On Protein
Eating a good amount of protein during mealtime will fill you up faster and keep you feeling full for longer. Lean proteins are full of amino acids which help stabilize your blood sugar and can also improve concentration (so you don’t miss anything from your trip!). It is a good idea to stock up on the protein while on vacation so you won’t need those sugary, salty in between meal snacks. Make sure to choose healthy, lean meats when you are protein loading!
Drink Water
It is very possible that you frequently mistake the feeling of being thirsty with the feeling of being hungry. Try to recognize how you are really feeling! Don’t reach for a bag of chips when all our body really needs is some water.
Also, while on vacation you will be on the run most of the time, trying to fit in as much as you can into a few days away. This can leave you very, very thirsty. Grab the water and make sure you stay hydrated while you are on the go. Not only will staying hydrated make you feel better physically but it will curb the desire to eat unhealthy foods and also can brighten your mood. Carry a bottle of water with you at all times during your vacation.
You Can Do it!
The primary way to eat healthy while on vacation is just to plan ahead. Plan which restaurants you will eat at, plan to pick up some healthy groceries and snack foods and plan to carry water. All of these little tricks will help you eat healthy while on vacation for sure. Vacation doesn’t mean a break from healthy choices so keep up your wholesome diet even though you are away- your body will thank you!
