Rewind three years, I weigh 95 kilograms and I’m a hefty and unhappy size twenty with more health problems than I have fingers to count them on. I knew something had to be done when my Doctor said simply, it is because you are morbidly obese that you are so sick, you have to take responsibility here.
So take responsibility I did. I joined a gym and what started as a torturous thrice weekly necessity soon became a daily routine that I cherished. The bliss of being totally engaged in a workout is indescribable! I felt so much more relaxed and in control of my life. I felt happier and healthier and the weight soon dropped off; I couldn’t believe that something so simple and enjoyable was something I’d avoided for so long.
Imagine my horror then as the redundancy letters were served and after many rounds of interviews I lost my job and therefore my income. My first thought was not about my house or car but about my gym membership, I immediately knew that it was a luxury I could no longer afford. But how to give it up? What to do instead?
My friends directed me to all sorts of news articles that shouted about miracle home workouts as I sat and wailed about getting fat and losing my fitness.ย And that was it you see, I didn’t want a miracle, just a way to keep fit and stay trim. My last day as a gym member loomed ahead and I still didn’t knew what to do. I’d half heartedly thought about running along the canal but there is no variety there, nothing to keep my interest past a few sessions.
I had a long hard think about my priorities and decided that my health was my number one priority above everything else, even getting another job. After all, you can’t work if you are sick. At this point I decided to buy some home gym equipment with my pay off from work.ย My friends thought I was mad spending what little money I now had on fitness equipment. But I knew that it was a sound investment that would help me stay fit and in shape without having to pay a monthly subscription.
Six months down the line and I’ve managed to find a new job, but I still use my home gym set up and I stick to my daily routine even better than before as it is all just there waiting for me in my cellar. What could be better?
